The History of the Vasa (Wasa)

When looking at ships of this era, the ships that are often best remembered are those of incredible achievements. However, when the Swedish maritime services built the Vasa for Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden in the 1620s, it was supposed to be a gift of eloquence. However, the ship – though immensely beautiful – was a crushing failure. The ship came to be from 1626 to 1628, taking a huge amount of time, resources and manpower to piece together.

Embarrassingly, it sunk a mere mile into the maiden voyage of the ship. The warship herself never became anything else other than a fine metaphor for failure. The ship was initially attempted to be recovered, though this was never possible. It lay dormant until the 1950s, when a largely intact hull was finally pulled out from the sea. This took place eventually in 1961, and was housed in a museum custom-built for it alone

Eventually, it was moved to Stockholm, where it joined the Vasa Museum stock. Today it attracts tens of millions of visitors. The fact it was so strong and powerful was part of the problem; all it took was a mild breeze to blow the whole thing horribly off course. Even in port, though, its instability was easily noticed. The King of the era, though, lacked the patience to wait for this to be solved – the maiden voyage was supposed to join up with the ships taking part in the Thirty Years’ War.

The fact that nobody was found to be at fault for the failed ship probably tells its own story. Even after so long underwater, many of the items onboard were found intact and helped really paint the picture of 17th-century naval warfare. At the very least, it let us see that, if nothing else, the Vasa was indeed as opulent as it was proclaimed!

Shipping & Delivery

We do not offer Free Shipping. It’s important to note that due to ordering from some specific suppliers, our delivery times may vary slightly between products. Since we don’t hold stock ourselves, we do rely on third parties. Occasionally they make mistakes meaning a product we thought was in stock may have just run out — in which case we’ll let you know just as soon as we can and explain your options.

Also, the delivery times are our best estimates only. Many things can delay your order, including freight delays, bad weather, customer location and the local post/courier service. If we do know there is a delay, we’ll email you as soon as we can with the updated delivery time.

If your order is in stock and we process the charges to your credit card, it will ship within five business days from the date of your order.  We will send you tracking information within 24 hours of your order leaving the warehouse to the e-mail address your provide when checking out.  If you do not receive tracking information from us within six business days of your order, feel free to follow up with us.

All items dispatched via courier have an implicit 'Authority to Leave' at the customers'  shipping address, unless the customer has indicated otherwise at the time of ordering.

Most commercial courier and postal companies we use to send customers' packages will in most instance leave your parcel at the property / address indicated on the order, in a safe, concealed location if it hasn't already been accepted by a resident. At times certain courier drivers may leave a note for the customer with a contact number to call and organise a suitable time for re-delivery or an address of the depot where the package will be left in order for the customer to pick up, if the driver could not find a safe concealed location at the property. This is at the discretion of the courier driver.

In cases where the customers' package/parcel is left at the collection depot and the customer has not picked it up by the due date indicated or the customer has not organised a suitable time for re-delivery, the default course of action is for the item to be sent back to the sender. If this occurs, all returned packages, will be subject to a 20% (of item price) restocking fee. Any subsequent re-shipping charges will also be borne by the customer.

So while we do our best to make sure your order arrives in full and on time, if you absolutely need something guaranteed to arrive on time, like your partner’s wedding anniversary gift, then we recommend you allow yourself enough time before placing an order.

We reserve the right to amend or add to these Terms & Conditions.
