Black Spartan Helmet
Unlike other Greek city-states such as Athens, which was a center for the arts, learning and philosophy. Sparta was centered on a warrior culture. Male Spartan citizens were allowed only one occupation: to become soliders. Indoctrination into this lifestyle began early. Spartan boys started their military training at age 7, when they left home and entered the Agoge.
Spartan hoplites were often depicted bearing a transverse horsehair crest on their helmets, which was possibly used to identify officers. To the Spartans, long hair retained its older Archaic meaning as the symbol of a free man.
